The history of Polish pottery goes back to the Middle Ages. In the 19th century pottery from Boleslawiec started to be distinguished by its special and original ornamentation technique. It emerged because local potters decided to make their products even more desirable when they began to be more and more popular in Europe. The founders of ceramic tradition were Germans. We’re experiencing over and over the renaissance of the stamp method that they invented. Beside the original sponge stamps, the decorations are also painted with the use of brushes and natural paint. From the beginning Lower Silesia was the place where manufactures were constructed. It always had been famous for ceramics factories and glassworks – the finest in this part of Europe. Royal courts from all over Europe were demanding the products from local craftsmen and similarly today the unique ornamentation from Lower Silesia is known in the whole world.
The biggest challenge that Boleslawiec factory workers had to face occurred after World War II. Facilities had to be restored after being abandoned by their owners and deprived of machines. Polish pottery began to follow the tradition of “Paul und Sohn” factory (1893-1945). Descendants of Julius Paul – founder of the factory in 1893 – visited the current one in 2004. Today’s manufactory is a modern artistic industry that produces applied arts articles based on its own original design, connecting local tradition and latest global trends. The interest of Western European merchants in stamp ornamentation method made it be predominant. Each utensil is decorated by hand with the use of stamps made of natural sea sponge and with the help of brushes and ecological paints. Eventually the utensils, painted in unique patterns, are fired in kilns at a temperature of 1250 degrees Celsius. The resulting ceramics are safe and can be used in ovens and cleaned in dishwasher.
By 1989 “Artistic Ceramics” factory had been expanded, which helped to handle the growing demand. The products, brought to perfection of shape, form and ornamentation, became articles that were awarded during many international exhibitions in the country and abroad. Next to the traditional buyers like Germany, Holland, France and United States, other markets are usually hermetic ones like Australia, New Zealand, Scandinavia, Korea or Japan. All the decorations are exceptional and representative of Polish pottery and are prized all over the world.
